Located one block above Telegraph Avenue, Channing-Bowditch is the second of two student housing infill projects completed by PYATOK in the South Side Neighborhood.
The design complements the shingle style of the historic Anna Head School and the adjacent Shorb House, creating a precinct of relaxed Berkeley-style buildings that has been further strengthened with the completion of Martinez Commons. The project provides 228 beds in single- and double-occupant bedrooms. The primary building is set back from the street to reduce its scale and preserve a large Deodar cedar. Three-story wings step down to the street, framing two trellised entry courts at Channing Way. The street-facing townhomes with shared stoops provide an independent living option for upper-level students. The combination of multiple entries, overhanging porches, and rich landscaping create an active and welcoming street frontage and a strong sense of connection with the diverse Southside community.
