This project lies at the edge of downtown Palo Alto in a neighborhood known as “Professorville,” an affluent residential enclave of classic single-family craftsman homes, where the median home price was $1.5 million at the time of construction. PYATOK facilitated several community meetings to generate the form, organization and program of the project. The process resulted in buildings that have been very well received by the local homeowners, despite the income and wealth disparities between the new residents and neighbors. To avoid a continuous street wall, buildings were oriented perpendicular to the street with front porches and stoops matching the neighborhood pattern and concealing the partially below grade parking. The plan includes preservation of several mature oak trees and an existing historic boarding house was relocated on site to serve as community center.
